What to expect at a C-Card appointment

C-Card appointments are simple and relaxed. They’re about helping you get free condoms and safer-sex support.

Browse the topics below to find the information you’re looking for.

Key takeaways

During the appointment, you’ll:

  • Be shown how to use condoms correctly
  • Get your free C-Card and condoms
  • Find out where you can pick up more condoms in future
  • Be told where to go for testing, support or advice if you need it

You don’t need to know everything before you go.

It’s a safe space to ask questions.

You can come back anytime to get more condoms or support.

You’ll usually speak one-to-one with a sexual health nurse, or someone who works for the C-Card scheme. They’ll explain what the service offers and check what you’re there for. The conversation is informal, private, and not rushed.

If it’s your first time, they’ll help you register for a C-Card. If you already have one, they’ll help you pick up condoms, dams and/or lubes.

You will be asked a few basic questions. These will include your age, whether the condoms are for you, and if you feel good in your relationships.

If you’re under 16, they may ask a bit more to check you understand how to keep yourself safe. These are to help staff make sure you get the right support.

You’ll be offered condoms and, if you want, a quick chat about things like:

  • Using condoms properly
  • Finding the right fit (there are different types and sizes)
  • Safer sex and contraception

Under the C-Card scheme, we can offer loads of different types of safer sex products.

You can check them out online, or you can talk to someone at the C-Card scheme about them.

C-Card appointments are usually confidential. What you say isn’t shared with parents, carers or school. Staff will explain this clearly and let you know if there’s ever a limit to confidentiality.

You can visit our web page that explains exactly what all this means.
